somewhereness

The elusive character of a vineyard in a bottle of wine — the influences of soil, location and climate — is often referred to as terroir. Wine Spectator columnist Matt Kramer brought this old-world notion to the new- world lexicon by coining the term, “somewhereness” in his book Making Sense of Wine.

To celebrate this concept, a handful of Ontario’s most inspired wineries pioneered an annual tasting event four years ago and appropriately called it Somewhereness. This dynamic event synergizes the passion for wine with enlightening discussion and wine-country cuisine.

In collaboration with Vintages, this inspired event takes place at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre — an architectural gem by renowned firm KPMB. Somewhereness 2011 is pleased to welcome Ian D’Agata, contributing writer for Decanter and Italian wine correspondent for Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, who will present his interpretation of this wine philosophy.

In addition to Ian's writings, he is also the Director of the Wine Academy of Rome. Few writers have as much exposure and understanding of both the international and Ontario wine scene.  In his regular trips to Toronto to visit family, he makes a point of meeting with our winemakers to taste our continued evolution as an industry.

Somewhereness is a structured tasting and keynote address by Mr. D’Agata followed by a walk-around tasting of more than 40 wines including many releases from your favourite producers. Understanding that wine is nothing without food, we are joined by eight of Ontario’s most favoured wine country restaurants and dairies.

Join Stratus and nine of our winemaking colleagues as we share our passion and sense of “somewhereness”.
