Harvest of Ontario grapes flows into good cause Evergreen and Stratus Vineyards partner to give back to nature through new Evergreen wine label December 11, 2014, Toronto, ON:
Evergreen, a not-for-profit whose purpose is to bring nature to cities, has worked with long-time partner Stratus Vineyards to create a wine representative of the natural connections between the two organizations. “From our shared appreciation for the land and our desire in connecting people and communities to nature, Evergreen and Stratus enjoy a special relationship,” says Geoff Cape, CEO Evergreen. “We’re both quite sociable organizations, especially around our Farmers’ Market at Evergreen Brick Works, so Stratus’ will and ability to make connections and spark conversations fits neatly with our approach to addressing urban environmental issues in the community.” “Making a wine to highlight our relationship and our shared passions is a wonderful way to symbolize our friendship as well as reaffirm our core beliefs,” explains Charles Baker, Director of Marketing and Sales Stratus Vineyards. “The flavour of these wines will continue on as part of Evergreen’s important work in greening cities.” Proceeds of each bottle will go towards environmental programming, notably at Evergreen’s headquarters in Toronto’s Don Valley Ravine, Evergreen Brick Works. Those interested in buying a bottle can do so online at stratuswines.com and at the Evergreen Brick Works Farmers’ Market starting this Saturday and next leading into the holidays during Farmers’ Market Hours 9-1.
The 2008 Evergreen White: Combines all the foresight, courage, innovation and common-sense we see in Evergreen Canada. I is a unique blend of five varietals — Chardonnay, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer an Viognier. The nose is one of ripe Niagara stone fruit, honeysuckle blossom, and spice. The palate is lean, elegant, crisp and bone dry pointing to considerable cellaring potential.
The 2008 Evergreen Red: Everything we want in a full-bodied bottle – savoury fruit, elegance, spice, and length. Red berries and blackcurrants reflect the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. 20 months of ageing in French oak adds a spicy vanilla complexity. A combination of judicious crop thinning, late picking in early December, and considerable lowering of yields has produced an elegant and structured inaugural Red for Evergreen.
