Beginning to exhibit the personality of a fine, aged red wine, the 2006 Stratus Red would be a great "ringer" in a blind line up of older Bordeaux bottlings. The 2006 is comprised of all five Bordeaux varietals, plus a little Gamay and Syrah to add even more layers of fruit complexity. Twenty months in oak barrels give the wine an aromatic profile reminiscent of library bookshelves. The dark fruit is delicate and developed, supported by forward acidity and mature tannins that keep the wine vibrant and alive on the palate.

Growing Conditions

The moderate crop of the 2005 harvest and a mild winter left hardy and healthy vines for the 2006 growing season. No spring frost affected the buds, and we had an average bud-break, followed by healthy flowering and fruit-set. The vineyard benefited from a warm summer with moderate and timely rains. After veraison, we had a cool ripening period, with above average moisture approaching harvest. This pushed back the harvesting of early-ripening varieties and resulted in a normal picking date of late-ripening varieties.
