This vintage reminds of a great role actor; plays the part and doesn't stand out other than a most excellent interpretation. Classic Riesling aromatics that are transforming over to a bouquet of light petrol, lime citrus, and a flinty steely core. The palate is full and rich with bright mouthwatering acidity. There are notes of white peach, grapefruit, sweet clover, and yellow blossoms. The floral and herbal undercurrent so typical of this vineyard lingers on with petrol and smoky notes.
"Evolving nicely now, just starting to shift into the honeyed-mineral spectrum of flavours as fresh citrus fruit is shed, Baker's Picone vineyard bottling has already developed significant complexity, with more to follow. The palate is still tight and taut, crunchy and essentially dry, with terrific energy and verve. Length is also excellent. This is one of the stonier and more mineral Picone vineyard bottlings in my experience, distinctive and sharp. Drink or hold for a decade without issue. Tasted November 2017. Growing Conditions
2014's growing season was a little slow off the mark, with a cold spring that delayed budbreak. Unseasonably cool in the summer, we had slow maturation of both whites and reds. The year was looking very favourable for fresh whites with cool-climate character, then a very warm September / October arrived to finally mature the reds. Picking very late in the fall rewarded us with fully ripe reds with beautiful acidity and red fruit character.
