Sourced from two of the original blocks of the Stratus Vineyard, one of which dates back to 1985 and comprised of silty loam, clay and limestone. A cool spring and summer followed with a very warm and lengthy late summer and fall allowed a harvest between October 8 and 10. Barrel fermented with indigenous yeast followed by monthly lees stirring in a combination of neutral and newer oak barrels contribute to texture and creaminess. Fleshy tones of ripe peach, citrus make this a dynamic, elegant medium-bodied Chardonnay with a nod to its single-vineyard terroir.

Growing Conditions

At Stratus, our vineyard’s voice is defined as much by the soils underfoot, as the shifting weather patterns above. Our Weather Report series is ever-changing – each wine, an individual snapshot of a growing season.

What are GGDs? Growing Degree Days - The total number of cumulative heat units measured from an average temperature of 10°C through harvest. In 2017 GDD for our Weather Report Chardonnay was 1462.

The year began with above average winter temperatures and low snow precipitation. Spring was timely with bud-break occurring the week of May 8. Cooler, damp temperatures began soon after however and remained through the height of the growing season. Fortunately, an even flowering mid-June was not hindered by these conditions. Extra attention to cluster thinning and leaf plucking was taken to ensure high quality fruit. Fortuitously, summer weather seemed to start in September and carried through the warmest October in a decade. The total number of growing degree days soared during these two months allowing for delayed, but optimal ripeness. Perfect harvest conditions held through November. After the ong and dry autumn, a sudden cold snap in mid-December allowed for an early pick of Icewine.
