Spring to Sprung! at Stratus
May 21, 2013, Niagara-on-the-Lake – With the growing season officially underway, Stratus Vineyards is gathering the community to revel in nature, growth, energy and life. “Sprung!” is a market that will bring farmers, chefs, artisans, musicians, poets, neighbours and community to the winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Sunday, May 26, 2013 from 11am to 6pm.
Building on the extraordinary success of their December 2012 market partnership called Kristlemas, Stratus has welcomed back Lauren O’Malley Norris of Gathering Niagara to curate this springtime celebration. “I love the imagery in the name ‘Sprung!’,” says O’Malley Norris. “You know right away that it’s a celebration of spring, but it’s also slang for being totally nuts or crazy about something. And there is such energy in the word itself. It just leaps out at you and makes you want to jump!”
In what has become O’Malley Norris’s trademark style, there are many layers to the offerings at Sprung! It’s a market with produce, heirloom vegetable seedlings, and artisans. It’s a delicious foodie destination with wine, chefs and foods of all kinds. It’s informative and creative, with workshops, displays and poets. And for the kids, there are hands-on crafts and planting opportunities.
“The secrets to the success of Sprung!, and the other seasonal markets that we are planning, are collaboration and community,” said Suzanne Janke, director of hospitality and retail for Stratus Vineyards. “We are excited to work with Lauren again, and with others from the community such as Oast House, Balzac’s, Tree and Twig, and Treadwell.” Through a partnership with Mahtay Café of St. Catharines, two local musical acts will perform at Sprung! – The Cardinals and Sound Sound. And community organizations such as The Garden of Eating – Niagara will be on hand to explain their programs.
“The Sprung! Market will make use of much of the property at Stratus, with vendors set up on the vineyard’s edge and inside in the press alley, gourmet food trucks in the parking lot, activities on the terrace, and seminars and workshops all day in the Vineyard Room,” said O’Malley Norris. Stratus will also be creating three beautiful vegetable beds to celebrate community, nature and growth.
“Our staff are looking forward to welcoming the community to our winery and our vineyard, and to pouring some Wildass wines – the wines that inspired this series of markets,” added Janke. The Wildass Market Series will continue to celebrate each season, with upcoming dates including August 11 and October 6. The second annual Kristlemas Market will be held December 15, 2013.
There is no admission fee for Sprung! and there is plenty of free parking. Some vendors are cash-only. For a full vendors list and workshop schedule, visit www.gatheringniagara.com/sprung.
